El barco de bandera chilena "Tucapel" tuvo la desdicha de naufragar en una zona complicadisima, justo delante de una gran rompiente, lo cual hizo que las operaciones de rescate fuesen dificultosas. De tierra se organizaron diversas expediciones con resultados fatídicos, allí se inmolaron cinco pescadores camanejos en esta jornada solidaria y profundamente humana.

 Por su parte la nave "Maipo" perteneciente a la Compañía Sudamericana de Vapores, retornó del puerto de Chala con el firme propósito de prestar ayuda, pero las corrientes arremolinadas y la rompientes hicieron infructuosos los intentos de rescate. Del puerto de  Quilca llegó Ezequiel Bedoya con dos pequeñas embarcaciones y de Mollendo el vapor nacional "Santa Rosa; ninguna de estas misiones tuvo éxito y asi la mayoria de los infaustos náufragos que quedaron atrapados en el buque fallecieron inexorablemente. Los diarios de la época como "El Callao" "La Prensa" y "El Comercio" relataban con expresivo clamor la imposibilidad del rescate, como esta nota aparecida en el diario "La Prensa" del cinco de setiembre de 1911.
